The sun began to set, signaling the small crew to cease their search for the day. Many were becoming restless as they had been at it for maybe five days now and haven't found a single thing. True it is that Dantooine is a Force enriched planet, and because of that the team had expected to find something, however minuscule. The fact that nothing at all Force related turned up, well it was disheartening, especially so to some of the apprentices who were accompanying them. All in all, the whole camp was in a bad mood, and no matter what Ativesa tried, he couldn't help lift their spirits.
As the night drawled on most of the camp lay asleep, every jedi was exhausted from having to help move quite a few massive boulders out of a certain place that an apprentice said that something particularly concentrated with the force was located there. It turned out to be nothing, and Ativesa and Brandon were the last one's left awake. The Albino Rodian had been leaning against a fairly large stack of crates as Brandon walked onto the scene. The youth spoke up, "Couldn't sleep either"? The Rodian slowly shifted his gaze from the moonlit sky to his young student.
"I suppose not, there's just something about this planet that makes me restless, especially out here in the middle of nowhere". Replied the wizenedRodian. Brandon nodded, in truth he was feeling the same way, despite how untrained and useless he was, you would have to be as dense as stone not to notice. In the day time it was fine, it was just the night, it reminded Ativesa a little to much of home. Rodia was home to a large number of large and vicious beasts, and from what Ativesa read about Dantooine, there was one in particular that he kept an eye out for. The fearsome, massive, Graul.
It was one of the few beasts that Ativesa knew of that could rival the rancor in shear ferocity and intimidation, being almost as large as a Rancor from what Ativesa knew, it had never been domesticated. Unlike the Rancor who was tamed by the former Nightsisters of Dathomir, which just made Ativesa think it to be even fiercer a beast.
A roar could be heard off in the distant, it was a feint bellow, but Ativesa knew it's origin. It was one of the beasts he was just thinking of, the Graul. Picking up a pair of binoculars he looked off into the distance for a sign of the beast. Nothing, it seemed to have just been a loner get hurt, possibly by a heard of Thune or another of its kind. Turning back to face Brandon Ativesa's eyes widened, there was a figure standing upon the cliff, seemingly unarmed, but it gave an odd signal. Almost instantly Ativesa could feel as well as hear a massive rumble, at least a dozen of the massive graul were heading there way.
"Brandon, wake everyone up, this aint good"! Taking up a position Ativesa removed his T-21 from its holster and with the high powered scope he attached lined up the cross hair with one of the beasts heads. Unlike the regular T-21 his was modified, it's power was doubled, and there was no more need for a backpack to hold all of the energy. His T-21 only had five shots, where as with the source of energy he put in would normally have ten, he tinkered with it and it now was more of a sniper rifle than anything else.
One shot was sent out, the target was fairly far away so it missed its intended mark, instead striking the beast in the shoulder. Enough to knock it back slightly, but certainly not enough to slay the beast. The beasts neared, but as the Rodian lined up his next shot, something struck him in the back. It was not a laser, his armor would have deflected it more, no, it was a bullet. From a more ancient rifle, as the Rodian spun around he noticed quite a few figures in hidden places upon the mountain, each using the same weapon that had just struck Ativesa.
He bolted for cover, and as he patched up his wounds the jedi awoke. Quickly briefing them on the situation Ativesa focused on the raiders upon the mountain, taking out four before running out of ammo, but the wound in his back was now making him feel lightheaded. Brandon rushed over and provided one of the few things he actually knew how to do, First aid, he came over and Ativesa quickly stripped off his jacket and shirt, the bullet had gone all the way through the Rodian.
The young man named Brandon began the procedure, wrapping him up tightly in bandages he hoped it would stop the bleeding, if only a bit. It worked, but by the time he was finished the Graul were upon them. They easily knocked aside the apprentices, who in a combined effort managed to slay one. The knight brought another to its knees as it collided down onto the ground and lay there, dead. His death though, was probably one of the most gruesome Ativesa had ever seen.
Three shots from the raiders had hit him in the back, distracting him briefly a Graul took the oppurtunity and caught the man in between it's jaws. It snapped him clean in half, and even someone as war hardened as Ativesa couldn't watch. One of the scientists made his way to a beacon and sent off a distress signal with a hologram message. "Help, we are under attack by raiders, they appear to be controlling Grauls much li-... Wait, no Wait.... STOP... ARGHHH"! The man screamed in pain as a Graul crushed him between its hand.
Ativesa took the opportunity and reloaded his weapon, sending off one shot towards the beasts head, killing it instantly. This only served to madden some of the others as one rushed towards him, another shot, and another one was down, but Ativesa didn't have enough time to line up another shot, all he managed was a shot to the shoulder before it reared it's arm back and backhanded him into the mountain. The Rodian grunted in pain as he fell to the ground and everything went black. Was he dead? No, merely unconscious, but everyone else was murdered, that is, everyone, except for Brandon. Who was taken hostage by the raiders who only left behind a message.
