After reading over several posts pertaining to Star Wars related facts, I feel that I might be at a slight disadvantage. The only working knowledge that I have
about the Star Wars universe is from the movies and what I can find by browsing the internet. Does anyone have a recommendation on a list of books that I could
pick up to help me on my journey? Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated, as I have not read any Star Wars books.
It's true that books can give you a helpful insight into this universe, but so long as you have some knowledge you'll get by. Wookieepedia is also an
excellent source of information.
However, if you are looking for books to read, I believe a recent thread decided that anything by Timothy Zahn was well worth reading. His books include the
Thrawn Trilogy, the Hand of Thrawn Duology and the Outbound Flight/Survivor's Quest Duology. Kevin J. Anderson's Jedi Academy Trilogy is also quite
good.
"What sweet irony; to use my foe's weapons against them."
All of them. Failing that, I would suggest the X-wing series, for non-jedi antics(especially the Wraith squad half), anything my Timothy Zahn, I, Jedi, just
because it gives a good first person idea of being a force user, and admittedly is one of my favorites, and, if you're in for the long haul, the New Jedi
Order series, where the yuzzhan vong make the galaxy it's Biatch.
Timothy Zahn rules.
Kevin J anderson, I haven't read his SW books but plan to. His work with Brian Herbert for Dune has been great.
I have read the Bane Duology, Revenge of the Sith, Dark Lord: THe Rise of Darth Vader, Dark Saber too. All of them are good reads but I'd stick with Zahn.
Read his first. You get the good, the bad, nad the ugly all in one. Easily the best place to start. Also...
For reading books by Timothy Zahn, be sure to read them in the ORDER they were published. If you don't you'll miss things or not get some twists or
jokes. Always read books by the author in the order they came out. Thrawn Trilogy so forth. ^-^
Black Fleet Crisis might be a good trilogy to check out, too. Gives you pretty good insight on all aspects of Star Wars... fleet battles, force users,
politics, space travel, etc... also an all around great read. The Thrawn Trilogy should definitely be your first stop though, as others have already told you.
And if you do happen to involve yourself in the NJO Series, which I wouldn't recommend unless you're REALLY serious about learning Star Wars (since
it's really long and in several places not very good), you can skip Vector Prime (the first book in the series and the first place the series fails to
deliver) and start with the Dark Tide duology.
I'm currently reading Cloak of Deception, and thoroughly enjoying it. It's interesting to read a Star wars book that is more focused on the politics. I
give James Luceno thumbs up.
